Ruling on taraweeh prayer

Jurists have held several opinions regarding the ruling on taraweeh prayer, as follows:

  • Hanafi: The Hanafi school of thought in their opinion holds that taraweeh prayer is a confirmed Sunnah. Evidenced by the Rightly Guided Caliphs’ preservation of it, it is a Sunnah for men and women.
  • Malikis: The Malikis believe that praying taraweeh is definitely recommended and recommended, and this ruling includes men and women. According to the hadith of the Prophet – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – which was narrated by Abu Hurairah:

(Whoever prays Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven, and whoever prays Laylat al-Qadr out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven).

  • Shafi’i and Hanbali: Shafi’is held that taraweeh prayer ramadan is Sunnah, and they cited consensus as evidence for that.
  • Hanbalis: The Hanbalis believed that taraweeh prayer ramadan is one of the confirmed Sunnahs enacted by the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – and it is one of the apparent rituals of Islam.

They used as evidence the hadith narrated by Aisha – may Allah be pleased with her -; She said: (The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, prayed one night in the mosque, and people led him in prayer, then he prayed from the midwife, and the people increased, then they gathered on the third night.

Or the fourth, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did not go out to them, so when the morning came he said “I saw what you did, and nothing prevented me from going out to you except that I feared it would be imposed on you, and that was during Ramadan.”

The number of rak’ahs of Tarawih prayer

It is preferable in taraweeh prayer to pray eleven rak’ahs; For the action of the Prophet; It was reported from him that he did not perform more than that in Ramadan or at any other time, as Lady Aisha described the Prophet’s prayer in Ramadan and said: (The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, did not perform more than eleven rak’ahs in Ramadan or at any other time), and whoever exceeded It is permissible, and the conditions of the people and their ability are taken into consideration.

The scholars have unanimously agreed that taraweeh prayer should not be limited to a specific number, except that they differed regarding the preference for an additional increase or not. Al-Shafi’i, Abu Hanifa, Ahmad, Sufyan Al-Thawri, and Ibn Al-Mubarak held that it is twenty rak’ahs. ; Omar and Ali – may Allah be pleased with them – did the same, and he may pray it with thirty-six rak’ahs, as is well-known in the doctrine of Imam Malik.

Ruling on praying Tarawih prayer in group

The ruling in praying taraweeh. The opinions of the jurists differed regarding the ruling in congregation in taraweeh prayer, as follows:

1-Hanafi:

The Hanafi are of the view that congregational taraweeh prayer are Sunnah based on sufficiency; If some people performed it in a group, this would be sufficient for the rest of the people, but if everyone left it, that would be disliked.

For abandoning the Sunnah, and if only one of the people fails, the reward for praying in congregation in the mosque has been forfeited from him, and if one of them performed it in congregation at home and there was no congregation in the mosque.

Then they have all done wrong, and they pointed out that every prayer in which the congregation is Sunnah, praying it in the mosque is better. Especially the prayer of the jurist who is a role model for others.

2-The Malikis:

They believed that praying in a group is a desirable matter. This practice has continued since the era of Omar bin Al-Khattab; When people gather to perform the prayer in a group, as for someone who fears hypocrisy, his prayer alone is better.

What is meant by being alone is that he performs it at home in a group, or alone, and it is stipulated for whoever wants to pray at home that his prayer in his home be more active for him in worship than in the mosque and that his prayer at home does not lead to disrupting the congregation in the mosque.

3-Shafi’is:

They believed that taraweeh prayer ramadan in the congregation is Sunnah. Because the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – gathered people on it for several nights, and did not go out to them the rest of the nights.

For fear that it would be imposed on them, as Omar bin Al-Khattab – may Allah be pleased with him – gathered people on it. He gathered the men against Ubayy ibn Ka’b, and the women against Suleiman ibn Abi Hathamah.

4-Hanbalis:

The Hanbalis adhered to the Sunnah of the Shafi’is in a group
