And each surah consists of a group of verses, and the number of these surahs is one hundred and fourteen surahs (114), and this is by consensus. Regarding this, Al-Zarkashi – may Allah have mercy on him – says: “Know that the number of chapters in the quran, according to the agreement of the scholars of law and contract.

Ranking of the surahs of the Holy Qur’an among scholars

The order of the surahs of the Holy Qur’an is arbitrary – that is, it is not permissible to change any of them. It was revealed from Allah Almighty in this form, and the order of the surahs today in our Qur’an is the same order that the Companions agreed upon in the Quran of Othman bin Affan – may Allah be pleased with him.

It was accepted by all of them, and it is the same thing that the Companions received from the Messenger of Allah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace. As for the arrangement of the surahs, the one who examines the Holy Qur’an finds that all the short surahs are gathered together at the end of the Holy Qur’an.

That is, in the thirtieth part – and they all talk about one topic. It is the belief of the people of Islam, and the efforts that the Messenger of Allah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – made with the infidels of Quraysh, and the disbelief and stubbornness he encountered from them, in addition to some social issues. As for the rest of the surahs in parts of the Holy Qur’an,

Sections of surahs of the Holy Qur’an

In addition to chapters in the quran,

surahs of the Holy Qur’an are divided into four sections:

  • Al-Tawal: It is seven surahs. Al-Baqarah, Al-Imran, Al-Nisa’, Al-Ma’idah, Al-An’am, Al-A’raf, and there is a detail in the seventh surah. Some of them said that anfal and repentance come together because they are not separated by the basmalah, and among them are those who said that it is Surah Yunus.
  • Al-Mi’un: These are the surahs whose number of verses exceeds one hundred or so.
  • Al-Mathani: These are the surahs whose number of verses is less than a hundred, that is, the surahs that follow the surahs of Al-Mi’in in the number of their verses. It is said that they were called that because they are repeated and repeated in recitation more than the long surahs and the surahs of Al-Mi’in.
  • Al-Mufassal: It is from the beginning of Surah “Q” to the end of the Qur’an, and it was said that it is from the beginning of the chapters, and it was said otherwise. It was said that Al-Mufassal is the surahs found at the end of the Holy Qur’an, and is divided into three sections: long, intermediate, and short.
  • The length of its surahs is from the beginning of Surah Al-Hujurat to the end of Surah Al-Buruj, its middle is from Surat Al-Tariq to Surat Al-Bayyinah, and its shortness is from Surat Al-Zalzalah to the end of the Holy Qur’an. It was given this name because of the frequent separation of its surahs with the basmalah.

Numerical information about the Qur’an

Muslims paid great attention to the chapters in the quran, and counted its verses, words, and letters, in addition to highlighting a lot of numerical information related to the Holy Qur’an. Below is a mention of some numerical information about the Holy Qur’an:

The number of parts of the Holy Qur’an is thirty. The number of verses in the Holy Qur’an is 6236 verses, and this is according to the Amiri Qur’an that was printed by the Egyptian government in the year 1342 AH. Al-Dani – may Allah have mercy on him.

Said that the number 6000 is a matter of consensus among the scholars, but their sayings varied regarding what was more than that, and some of them did not add anything, and added Some said 204, some said 214, some said 219, some said 225, and others added 236.

This is due to the difference in the number of verses of some Quranic surahs. This difference comes from hearing and transmission, not opinion. It is like the differences that exist between Quranic readings. The sayings of scholars have varied regarding the number of words of the Holy Qur’an. It was said that the number of its words is 77,934, and it was said that it is 77,437.

Al-Suyuti – may God have mercy on him – said that the reason for this diversity in sayings is that the word has a reality, a metaphor, a pronunciation, a diagram, and a consideration, and each of them is permissible in counting.

And each of the scholars relied on a specific thing in counting, and it was said: The number of letters in the Holy Qur’an is 23637. A letter, and it was said otherwise, and some scholars mentioned that the word “Allah” is repeated in the Holy Qur’an 2664 times.
