When the lam is added to the word شمس, it becomes الشمس, and the word is pronounced (شمس), meaning that the lam is not pronounced, while when the lam is added to the word قمر, the word moon becomes pronounced (القمر), meaning that the lam is pronounced, and its movement is sukun. 

Accordingly, the letters that are not pronounced as Lām are called lam shamsiya, while the letters that are pronounced as Lām are called qamariah letters.

How to teach the lam shamsiya and lam qamariah signs to children

There are many ways to teach the rule of lam qamariah and lam shamsiya in arabic, and among these methods are the following: 

  • The teacher displays a card in the shape of the sun and another card in the shape of the moon, and asks the students: “What does each shape represent?”, and the students answer the question. 
  • The teacher asks the students to put the word “sun” and the word “moon” in a sentence they created. Then she writes the sentences on the cards, making sure to write the shuddah on the letter “shin” in “the sun.” And writing the sukoon on the lam in “the moon.” 
  • The teacher asks: “Did we pronounce the laam in the word sun?” One of the students answers: “No.” Then she asks: “Did we pronounce the laam in the word moon?” One of the students answers: “Yes.”
  • The students are asked to repeat the sentences, taking care of the correct pronunciation. The lam shamsiya word is not pronounced, and the lunar word is pronounced. It is possible that the students will encounter difficulty at the beginning, but with repetition they will pronounce it correctly. 
  • The teacher draws on the board a table with two places: the lam shamsiya sign and the lunar sign. She draws a small sun in the solar sign and a small moon in the lunar sign. 
  • She asks the students to name the objects with (the) definition and classify them in the appropriate box. You read and repeat with the students the words in the table, taking into account the correct pronunciation.
  • Through discussion, you conclude with the students that the lam shamsiya is not pronounced and the letter that follows it has a sukūn on it, while the lam qamariah is pronounced with a sukūn on it. 
  • A story is told to the students to explain the lam shamsiya and qamariya letters. The story includes the following: One day some of the letters went to visit the sun, so the lam in their definition of (the) burned and became unpronounceable. 
  • The sun gave these difficult letters as a gift, but as for the letters that visited the moon, they preserved (the). ) Definition and is still pronounced with them.
