How many verses and letters of the Holy Quran and how many parties are there?

Number of verses in the qur’an: Scholars agreed that the number of verses in the Holy Qur’an is 6200 verses, but their opinions differed on what is more than that. They said:

6204 verses, and some of them said: 6214 verses.

And some of them said: 6225 verses, and some of them said 6236 verses, and some of them did not. Yazd said something and said: 6200 verses, and this is what Al-Dani reported. These numbers can be distributed among seven schools of thought as follows:

  • Issue 6217: It is the first Madinan issue that was narrated by Nafi’ on the authority of his two sheikhs, Abu Jaafar and Shaybah.

  • Number 6214: It is the last Madinan number that was narrated by Ismail bin Jaafar, on the authority of Suleiman bin Jamaz, on the authority of Abu Jaafar and Shaybah.
  • Number 6210: It is the Meccan number that was narrated by Abu Amr al-Dani on the authority of Ibn Katheer, on the authority of Mujahid, on the authority of Ibn Abbas, on the authority of Ubayy ibn Ka’b, on the authority of the Messenger of Allah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

  • Numbers 6226 and 6227: They constitute the Damascene number that was narrated by Al-Dani on the authority of Yahya Al-Dhamari, on the authority of Ibn Amir, on the authority of Abu Al-Darda’.
  • Number 6232: It is the Al-Homsi number and it was mentioned on the authority of Shurayh bin Yazid Al-Homsi.
  • Number 6236: It is the Kufic number that was narrated by Hamza and Sufyan on the authority of Ali bin Abi Talib – may Allah be pleased with him

Number of letters of the Qur’an

Muslims were interested in the qur’an and were keen on it to the point that they counted the number of its verses, words, and even letters, and their sayings were numerous in number. Some of them conveyed the consensus that the number of words in the Holy Qur’an is: 77,437 words, while its letters were said to be: 321,000 letters,[6] and it was said: 323,015.

The reason for the difference in the number of the qur’an is due to the disagreement regarding whether the Basmala is considered a verse from the beginning. Every Quranic surah or not, as well as the dispute over the letters of the Mudd and the like, whether they are among the letters of the Holy Qur’an or not.

The number of parties in the Qur’an

Ahzab is the plural of party, and it forms a group of verses or surahs of the qur’an. The division of the Holy Qur’an into parties differs in the time of the Companions from it in the present time. Below is a mention of the number of parties in the time of the Companions – may Allah be pleased with them – and their number in our current time:

1-Parties of the Holy Qur’an at the time of the Noble Companions – may Allah be pleased with them

There were seven parties in the qur’an during the time of the Companions, and the evidence for that is what was reported on the authority of Othman bin Abdullah Al-Thaqafi, on the authority of his grandfather, who said:

(We came to the Prophet – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – with a delegation from Thaqif, and he delayed us one night, and said: My reciting the Qur’an occurred to me, and I hated to go out until I finished it. So we asked his companions: How did he – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – recite the Qur’an, and they said? : Three, five, seven, nine, eleven, thirteen, and Hizb al-Mufassal).

The first party: Surat Al-Baqarah, Surat Al-Imran, and Surat Al-Nisa. The second party: Surat Al-Ma’idah, Surat Al-An’am, Surat Al-A’raf, Surat Al-Anfal, and Surat Al-Tawbah. The third party: Surat Yunus, Surat Hud, Surat Yusuf, Surat Al-Ra’ad, Surat Ibrahim, Surat Al-Hijr, and Surat Al-Nahl.

The fourth party: It starts from Surat Al-Isra and ends at the end of Surat Al-Furqan. The fifth party: It starts from Surat Ash-Shu’ara and ends at the end of Surat Ya-Sin. The sixth party: It starts from Surat Al-Saffat and ends at the end of Surat Al-Hujurat. The Seventh Party: It starts from Surat Q until the end of Surat An-Nas.

2-The parties of the Holy Qur’an in the present time

The parties of the qur’an in the present time are divided into sixty parties, and each two parties are considered a part, so the Qur’an is thirty parts, and we can find a party divided in the qur’an into two halves, or into four quarters of a party.

Do we find 240 quarter parties in the Qur’an. Completely, and the one who follows the quarters of the Ahzab may find that it sometimes consists of only 9 verses, and it may reach 70-86 verses at other times.

Conclusion
